  • Chicago Sun-Times

December 12, 2022- Op-ed: As Chicago gears up for city elections, ex-offenders need to know they have right to vote

The public generally believes that if the formerly incarcerated obey laws and avoid pushing back against the status quo, they will be redeemed as good citizens. However, this narrative is simply not true. Consider this: Some 3.3 million adults have been arrested or convicted of a crime in Illinois since 1979. Most of the 277,000 people released from prison in Illinois every year return to Cook County. Yet only a fraction of these individuals have seats at the tables where decisions are being made about the direction, values and investments made by our state and communities.

December 7, 2022- A northwestern Illinois city has taken another step toward welcoming citizens with felony convictions

This month, Kewanee hired a new employee who just got out of prison. A change in employment rules made it possible, and that might happen in the Quad Cities, too. A year ago, Kewanee removed legal sanctions that barred it from hiring previously incarcerated people. Mario Crowder, laborer for Kewanee Public Works

November 9, 2022- University of Chicago professor's research on former inmates earns MacArthur 'genius' grant

A felon in Illinois can't even host a game of bingo. That's just one of the laws on the state's books that affect people leaving prison. Life on the inside means missing celebrations, but getting out is no party, as evidenced by the decades-long analysis of University of Chicago sociologist Reuben Jonathan Miller.

  • WTTW- Chicago Tonight

    October 3, 2022- Permanent Punishment

Economic sanctions. Collateral consequences. Permanent punishments. There are 44,000 restrictive federal laws, rules, and policies that continue to penalize people long after they have served their sentence in prison. This WTTW News four-part series hosted by Chicago Tonight co-anchor Brandis Friedman examines this stark reality faced by nearly 3.3 million men and women in Illinois.

July 2, 2022- OP-ED: This Independence Day, millions of Illinoisans lack freedom

The Fourth of July is here again! And who in America doesn’t love a day filled with barbecues, fireworks, and cheer for the red, white, and blue? Independence Day is meant to be a celebration of “freedom.” Sadly, 246 years after the United States declared its independence, “freedom” or the reality of being “fully free” remains inaccessible for millions of its own residents with arrest or conviction records.
